Recognizing the Warning Signs of End-Stage Renal Disease

End-Stage Renal DiseaseEnd-stage renal disease (ESRD) affects over 500,000 people. In its earlier stages, it’s not unusual to be asymptomatic, and even later in the disease, it can be difficult to tie the symptoms to ESRD or another condition.

Becoming aware of the warning signs you can experience if you have ESRD will help you prioritize your health and seek medical attention when needed.

These Are the Signs of End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD)

If you are experiencing several of these symptoms in conjunction, you might be dealing with end-stage renal disease (ESRD).

  • A metallic taste in your mouth
  • Achy bones
  • Overall pain
  • Foamy urine
  • Anemia
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Concentration struggles
  • Puffiness around the eyes
  • High blood pressure
  • Confusion
  • Weakness
  • Headache
  • Dry skin
  • Changes in urination, especially urinating less
  • Breathing difficulties
  • Itching
  • Nausea
  • Muscle cramps
  • Lack of appetite
  • Insomnia
  • Edema

What Should I Do If I Believe I Have End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD)?

If you think you have end-stage renal disease and are experiencing many of the above warning signs, you should see your doctor immediately. The survival rate is only several weeks without medical intervention.

ESRD is kidney failure, which will only get worse if unchecked. The symptoms you experience now may become more pronounced, or you might notice other symptoms as your kidney failure progresses.

After an assessment of your symptoms and health, a doctor will likely recommend dialysis. This procedure will flush extra fluids and waste products from your bloodstream since the kidneys can no longer do it.

You might also need a kidney transplant, a surgical procedure where you will receive a donor’s healthy kidney or kidneys to restore normal functioning.
